About the Hannah Kinney Lifetime Achievement Award

The Hannah Kinney Lifetime Achievement Award honors individuals whose work has fundamentally advanced scientific discovery, clinical practice, investigative rigor, prevention efforts, and bereavement support in the field of sudden infant and child death.

Established to recognize enduring contributions to discovery, rigor, and prevention, the award reflects the values embodied by Dr. Hannah C. Kinney: intellectual courage, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to uncovering biological mechanisms underlying vulnerability in early life.

The award formally opens our annual conference, setting the intellectual and ethical tone for the days that follow

About Dr. Hannah C. Kinney

Dr. Hannah C. Kinney is a pioneering neuropathologist whose work transformed our understanding of brainstem abnormalities associated with sudden infant death. Her research helped shift the field from descriptive classification toward mechanistic insight, establishing biologically grounded frameworks that continue to guide investigation and prevention efforts worldwide.

In recognition of her foundational impact, Dr. Kinney was the inaugural recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award that now bears her name.

Her two lectures given upon receiving the award are available on our YouTube channel, reflecting the intellectual clarity and scientific depth that define her legacy.

Dr. Kinney will introduce this year’s award and honoree, reinforcing the continuity of leadership across generations in the field.

2026 Honoree: Dr. Torleiv Rognum

The 2026 Hannah Kinney Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Dr. Torleiv Rognum, internationally recognized for his pioneering work in forensic pathology and sudden infant death investigation.

Over decades of leadership in Norway and internationally, Dr. Rognum has strengthened investigative standards, advanced interdisciplinary collaboration, and elevated scientific rigor in the evaluation of unexplained pediatric deaths.

His contributions include:

  • Advancing modern forensic approaches to sudden infant death
  • Strengthening collaboration between pathology, epidemiology, and public health

Why this award matters

The Hannah Kinney Lifetime Achievement Award affirms that:

  • Scientific rigor must guide interpretation.
  • Investigation must evolve with evidence.
  • Families deserve accuracy, transparency, and compassion.
  • Prevention depends on interdisciplinary collaboration.

By honoring leaders whose work bridges discovery and practice, this award reinforces the mission of Twin Harbors: moving evidence to action.

We invite attendees to join us in recognizing a lifetime of impact and recommitting to advancing prevention through science, investigation, and collaboration.
